Volunteers for the Pantry

   Each week, the pantry is run by four (4) crews - a Tuesday crew, a Thursday crew, a Saturday crew and a Food pick-up crew. Each crew consists of three, four or more people. All crews work at Elizabeth House.
   The Tuesday crew works from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM. They distribute the pre-packed grocery bags to the clients scheduled for that day.
   The Thursday crew works from 9:00 AM to 11:30AM. They pack bags of groceries for each client according to pre-defined lists of food and clients. They also sort food donations received and shelve them in the “bulk storage” area, and restock shelves in the “packing area”. In addition, they distribute the pre-packed grocery bags to the clients scheduled for that day.
   The Saturday crew works from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. They distribute the pre-packed grocery bags to the clients scheduled for that day.
    The Food pick-up crew works on an as-needed basis to pick up food purchased by the Pantry coordinator to supplement food donated.

   Each volunteer is assigned to a crew for a specific day of the month and are asked to make an ongoing commitment for that same day each month (e.g. 1st Monday of each month, 2nd Tuesday of each month, etc.). Most volunteers work one day a month. However, you may sign up for more. If you are unable to make a long term commitment, you may request to work as a substitute on either crew on an “as-needed” basis.

Community Service

   Because of space limitations, we do not usually schedule volunteers wanting to do community service. We suggest you call Elizabeth House (301-776-9296) during that day’s working time and ask if you are needed.
