Volunteers for the Kitchen

   Each day, the kitchen is run by two (2) crews - a cooking (opening) crew and a serving/cleanup (closing) crew. Each crew consists of three, four or more people.
   The cooking crew works from 4:00 PM to 6:15 PM. They look at the available food for that day, the number of clients signed up for that day’s dinner and prepare the dinner accordingly. They also make lunches for the next day and get ready for serving crew.
   The serving crew works from 5:45 PM to 8:00 PM. They serve the dinners, distribute lunches, wash the cooking pots/utensils and leave the house in good order. Eating plates, utensils and cups are disposable.

   Each volunteer is assigned to a crew for a specific day of the month and are asked to make an ongoing commitment for that same day each month (e.g. 1st Monday of each month, 2nd Tuesday of each month, etc.). Most volunteers work one day a month. However, you may sign up for more. If you are unable to make a long term commitment, you may request to work as a substitute on either crew on an “as-needed” basis.

Community Service

   Because of space limitations, we do not usually schedule volunteers wanting to do community service. We suggest you call Elizabeth House (301-776-9296) after 4:00 p.m. on the day you wish to work and ask if you are needed.
